SURVEY DEPARTMENT

The Survey Department is responsible for developing and managing national spatial data and associated infrastructure in order to facilitate land administration, Scientific development and use.

The Department performs the following specific functions:

  • Conduct and control the survey and charting of land for the purposes of registration;
  • Maintain approved survey records;
  • Conduct and supervise trigonometrical, topographical and level surveys, and such geodetic and geophysical operation to facilitate control and mapping;
  • Maintain records of all trigonometrical, topographical and level surveys and geodetic and geophysical operations;
  • Prepare and certify maps from data derived from any surveys and amendment of maps;
  • Demarcate, re-affirm and maintain international and internal administrative boundaries; and
  • Provide Geographical Information to the public.

The Department is headed by the Surveyor General who is assisted by one (1) Assistant Surveyor General-Mapping, one (1) Assistant Surveyor General Survey Services and one (1)  Assistant Surveyor General-Cadastral.

The Department comprises the following three (3) Sections and ten (10) Provincial Offices:

  • Cadastral Services;
  • Survey Services;
  • Mapping Services; and
  • Survey Provincial Office.

Cadastral Section

The Section is responsible for coordinating the conduct and control of cadastral services to facilitate land registration.

The Section performs the following specific functions:

  • Coordinate and monitor the conduct of cadastral survey services;
  • Coordinate and manage national cadaster index mapping;
  • Develop and monitor the implementation of survey standards; and
  • Maintain a Cadastral Registry.

The Section is headed by an Assistant Surveyor General- responsible of Cadastral Services and assisted by (1) Principal Land Surveyor.

Survey Services Section

The Section is responsible for coordinating the conduct of trigonometric, Topographic and level surveys.

The Section performs the following specific functions:

  • Coordinate the demarcation, reaffirmation and maintenance of international boundaries;
  • Facilitate the construction and maintenance of trigonometric and Continuous Operating Reference Stations (CORS);
  • Facilitate Calibration and Assessment of Survey Instruments, and
  • Maintain a Control Registry.

The Section is headed by an Assistant Surveyor General – responsible for Survey Services and assisted by one (1) Principal Land Surveyor.

 Mapping Services Section

The Section is responsible for coordination of preparation and certification of maps and provision of geographical information to the public.

The Section performs the following specific functions:

  • Develop and monitor the implementation of mapping standards;
  • Facilitate the acquisition of spatial data by the public;
  • Coordinate integration of spatial data from other producers;
  • Coordinate production and revision of maps;
  • Coordinate management of spatial data;
  • Print and Publish maps.

The Section is headed by an Assistant Surveyor General – responsible for Mapping Services and assisted by (1) Principal Land Surveyor.

 

Provincial Survey Offices

The Provincial Survey Offices are responsible for developing and providing spatial data and managing associated infrastructure.

The Provincial Survey Office performs the following functions:

  • Verify availability of land targeted for alienation;
  • Allot unique parcel identifier (allocation of a property number);
  • Undertake cadastral and other surveys;
  • Prepare and examine survey records;
  • Undertake Cadastral Index mapping and Drawing;
  • Maintain a Cadastral and Control Registry;
  • Produce, revise and sell maps;
  • Construct and maintain trigonometric and Continuous Operating Reference Stations (CORS);

The Provincial Office are headed by a Principal Land Surveyors and assisted by two Land Surveyors and one GIS Officer;
